This allows me to have a clear understanding of your presenting issue, background, and desired outcome and for me to explain how I propose to work with you. It also helps to establish rapport so that you feel comfortable before making a decision to work with me and vice versa.

Hypnosis is an altered state of awareness. It’s the same state as when we are daydreaming and ‘staring into space’. The conscious part of the mind temporarily goes into rest mode and the subconscious part is more open and receptive to suggestion, direction or change. It is in this hypnotic state where therapeutic changes can take place.

We all spend time in and out of this hypnotic/trance state but, during a hypnotherapy session, you are gently guided into trance by the therapist through the use of words and imagery. It is very relaxing and safe and you are always in control. You cannot be hypnotised against your will and cannot think, do or say anything that you don’t want to. Whilst you are deeply relaxed, the conscious mind remains awake and observant. You are able to come out of hypnosis at any time. If there was an emergency where you needed to leave the building, you could stand up and walk out of the door feeling awake and alert … but wonderfully relaxed!

Hypnotherapy is therapy in a hypnotic state. To understand hypnotherapy, it is firstly useful to understand how our minds work.

Our mind has two parts, the conscious (10%) and the subconscious (90%). The conscious mind is the thinking, analytical part, which can process up to 7 pieces of information at any time.

The subconscious mind is the creative, imaginative part and can process billions of pieces of information at any time. It is like a gigantic memory bank, storing all our memories, thoughts and life experiences from the moment we were conceived. It is the information stored in our subconscious mind that affects our behaviour and actions in different situations.

Our conscious mind is usually involved in learning new things e.g. riding a bike, driving a car or tying shoelaces, we consciously learn the processes required but, with practice and repetition, the information filters through to our subconscious mind until it takes over and we are able to do these things subconsciously without thinking about them. The same thing happens with beliefs and behaviours … if you think something e.g. ‘I am stupid’ enough times and have it reinforced through repeating the thought, or from other people’s words or actions and events, then this can become a fully embedded belief in our subconscious which then drives us on a daily basis and becomes difficult to change at a conscious level.

When thoughts, feelings, beliefs and behaviours are having a negative impact on our lives in some way or another, hypnotherapy can help by identifying the root cause of them, challenging and releasing them and then presenting alternative better behaviours, which can begin the process of positive change.
We have all the answers and resources we need to make changes to our lives … we are more knowledgeable and resourceful than we know. It’s my job to help you identify and find the solutions to your problems and bring them to the surface, helping you to make positive changes in your life.

1-3 sessions is usually enough to help clients achieve their desired outcomes. In some cases, however, up to six may be necessary if there are more complex issues to resolve. I can usually gauge, during the consultation, how many sessions I think you will require.

After 30 years of anxiety about driving I had 2 sessions with Amanda and she put me at my ease immediately and her methods were very effective. From being extremely stressed at the idea of driving unknown routes I am now almost excited at the prospect of a drive somewhere new. I managed a 2 hour journey on motorways with no anxiety and am looking forward to visiting places I previously was too scared to drive to. Thanks to Amanda I feel the old fears are now firmly in the past.
